Hands-on soft-tissue care

Active Release Technique in Harleysville, PA

When tight, irritated, or restricted soft tissues interfere with the activities you love, a targeted approach may help. Active Release Techniques® (ART®) combines precise hands-on contact with guided movement to address soft-tissue dysfunction and support more comfortable movement.

Understanding ART

What Is Active Release Technique?

Active Release Techniques® is a structured manual soft-tissue treatment system. The provider examines how tissues feel and move, applies specific contact or tension, and guides the patient through a controlled movement.

The approach is used for selected muscle, tendon, ligament, fascial, and nerve-related complaints. Unlike equipment-based therapies, ART primarily relies on the provider's hands and your movement.

Whether ART makes sense for you depends on the cause of your symptoms, your health history, and the findings of an examination.

Potential applications

Soft-Tissue Complaints That May Benefit From Evaluation

ART may be considered when pain or limited motion is associated with soft-tissue restrictions. These are examples for evaluation, not promises that a particular condition will respond.

✓Neck and shoulder muscle tightness
✓Back and hip soft-tissue restrictions
✓Overuse-related muscle discomfort
✓Tennis or golfer's elbow symptoms
✓Running-related calf or hamstring tightness
✓Selected tendon complaints
✓Sports and repetitive-use injuries
✓Movement restrictions after prior injury
✓Selected nerve-related soft-tissue symptoms
Similar symptoms can have very different causes. An evaluation helps determine whether hands-on soft-tissue treatment is appropriate or whether another approach is needed.

Your visit

What to Expect With ART

The process is specific to your symptoms, movement, examination findings, and tolerance.

1

Evaluate the Problem

We discuss your symptoms and activity goals, examine movement, and look for tissue restrictions that may be contributing to your complaint.

2

Targeted Contact + Movement

During an appropriate ART procedure, the provider applies precise hands-on contact while guiding you through a specific movement. Pressure is adjusted to the area and your comfort.

3

Reassess and Plan

Movement and symptoms are reassessed. Depending on your needs, your plan may also include exercise, mobility work, or other chiropractic services.

Individualized treatment

Is ART Right for You?

ART is hands-on and does not involve surgery or injections. Treatment pressure may cause temporary discomfort or soreness in sensitive areas. The appropriate technique, intensity, and treatment plan vary by person.

Not every symptom is caused by a soft-tissue restriction. New or worsening neurological symptoms, significant trauma, or other concerning findings may warrant a different evaluation before manual treatment.

Please tell our team about recent injuries, surgeries, fractures, inflammatory conditions, new numbness or weakness, and any other medical concerns so your examination and care can be tailored appropriately.

Common questions

Active Release Technique FAQs

What does ART stand for?

ART stands for Active Release Techniques®, a hands-on treatment approach that combines precise tissue contact with guided patient movement.

Is ART the same as massage or stretching?

No. Although each can involve soft tissues, ART uses specific assessment, applied contact or tension, and patient movement as part of a structured treatment approach.

Does ART treatment hurt?

You may notice pressure or temporary discomfort when a sensitive area is treated. Tell your provider how the treatment feels so the approach can be adjusted.

How many ART treatments will I need?

There is no universal number. It depends on the problem, its duration and severity, examination findings, and response to treatment. We discuss an individualized plan after evaluation.

Can ART be combined with chiropractic care or exercise?

When appropriate, soft-tissue work may complement chiropractic care, mobility exercises, strengthening, and other movement-focused services.

Will insurance cover ART?

Coverage varies by plan and billing circumstances. Our office can explain current fees and payment options before care begins.
